Caodaist scholarship manifest in Riga

The Caodaist Overseas Missionary has, for the last few years now, been assisting scholars in their research on Caodaism. This year was no different with the Missionary helping Dr Sergei Blagov and I attend the CESNUR conference in Riga, Latvia. Now it might take some thinking to link Dao Cao Dai with the very extremities of Europe but nevertheless, this meeting of scholars presented a great chance for fostering interest in the religion at a scholarly and international level.

Note - Christopher Hartney has a BA Honors in Religious Studies from the University of Sydney where he is currently completing a Masters of Philosophy on the history of Caodaism in Australia. He tutors and is a part-time lecturer at the School of Studies in Religion and also works as a broadcaster for religious affairs for the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

Dr. Hoskins: I became interested in Caodaism by reading about it and seeing that there was a temple in Pomona, about 5 minutes from where I grew up. I had been studying religions in Southeast Asia for many years, mainly in Indonesia, and had read some reports about Caodaism published in English.

Dr. Mohammad Jahangir Alam, Lecturer at the Department of World Religions, University of Dhaka, Bangladesh, also a specialist in Caodaism, just informed that his department has approved the Cao Dai religion course to be included in the curriculum for third year students of the M.A program, starting with this academic year 2008-2009.

Caodaism is the first religious community so far that enables its adepts to have direct communication with the transcendental world via institutionalised spiritist seances. We believe that their doctrine provides the synthesis of all great teachings of the past. The full name of Cao Dai religion is “The Great Way of the Third Era of Salvation.”

During the course of taking Caodaism to the international community, the Caodai Overseas Missionary has been making some interesting contacts. Friends are appearing from the four corners of the world. It was nevertheless surprising to hear that interested parties had organized an international symposium on Caodaism at Dhaka University, Bangladesh.
