PRESENTATION ON CAODAISM AT THE 17TH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON DAOIST STUDIES AT WEIXIN SHENGJIAO IN TAIWAN

The 17th International Conference on Taoist Studies takes place from January 1 to January 5, 2024, at Weixin Shengjiao, Taiwan, jointly organized by Weixin Shengjiao Institute and Boston University, USA.
Professor Fiona Hsin-Fang Chang - Director of the Center for Religious Research and Development, affiliated with Weixin Shengjiao Religion, and Professor Livia Kohn, Boston University, USA, acted as co-chairs of the 17th Conference.
This 17th International Conference on Taoist Studies attracted a total of 70 Professors, Scholars, Researchers and students majoring in religious social sciences in Taiwan, and countries such as the United States, UK, Netherlands, Italy, France, Romania, Hong Kong, Philippines, Korea, China, Germany and Vietnam attended with research articles on Taoism, I Ching application, feng shui and religion in improving the quality of life, creating world peace in the spirit of harmony of Taoism, as well as introducing the rich application of Taoist spirit in different countries around the world. The total number of participants at the Conference is estimated at about 200 people.
Attending the 17th Conference on Religious Studies will be the presence of famous speakers in the field of religious studies such as:
-Professor Massimo Introvigne - President of CESNUR (Center for New Religion Research)
-Professor Livia Kohn - Boston University, USA
-Professor Eileen Barker - London University of Economics, UK
-Professor Rosita Soryté – Expert in the Scientific Committee of the European Federation for Religious Freedom and Former employee of the Lithuanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs
-Professor Bernadette Rigal-Cellard - University of Bordeaux-Montaigne, France
-Professor J. Gordon Melton - Baylor University, Texas, USA
-Professor and Chairman Bae Kyuhan - President of the Academy of Sciences, Daejin University, Korea
With prestigious speakers in the field of Taoism - Social Religion research in Taiwan such as:
-Academician Ly Phong Mao - Taiwan Central Research Institute
-Professor Ly Ngoc Tran - Head of the Department of Religious Studies, Chengchi University, Taiwan
-Professor Thai Nguyen Lam - Director of the Center for Religious Studies, Chengchi University, Taiwan.
Attending the Conference, there were also Cao Dai believers led by Rev. Thuong Canh Thanh , former Head of Caodai Sacerdotal Council Overseas, who was invited by the Organizing Committee of the 17th Taoist International Conference to attend in the advisory role on the integration of the Three Teachings in Cao Dai.
The following other Cao Dai members were also invited by the Organizing Committee as they were very close friends of Weixin Shengjiao, including:

3. Deaconess Huong Tru
4. Deaconess Huong Trang
5. Pham Le Thien An (English interpreter)
6. Truong Vu Quang Tien (Chinese interpreter)
During the opening ceremony of the Conference, Grand Master Hunyuan Chanshi, Founder of Weixin Shengjiao, on behalf of the Conference Organizing Committee, welcomed all guests and speakers, and expressed his desire for research papers, presentation, application in the spirit of Taoism, translation of scriptures, feng shui, and religions can be concretized, helping to bring peace in the world.
The first day of the Conference was arranged by the organizers for speakers and guests to attend the Worship Ceremony for the United Families of Chinese and Worldwide Ancestors at Taipei Sports University with the participation of a total of more than 10 thousand people.
During the 3 consecutive days of the Conference, there were a total of 70 presentations by speakers divided into 19 different topics, presented and discussed in two languages, English and Chinese, in the conference hall of Wexin Shengjiao Branch in Taichung, Taiwan.
Presenting about Caodaism in this Conference, there were two speakers including:
1. Professor Michael Wesch - Kansas University, USA with the topic "The Living Dao: A Visual Exploration of Daoism in Cao Dai Cosmology and Ritual".
2. Ph.D Candidate Nguyen Tuan Em - Chengchi University, Taiwan with a presentation on "Daoist Concept of Body, Mind and Soul in the Vietnamese Cao Dai Religion: From theory to practice"
Overall, international and Taiwanese speakers and researchers performed very well in their presentations, bringing a rich perspective on the diverse application of Taoist spirit, translating scriptures, and feng shui in religions and life in different places.
In addition to presentations sharing the research results of scholars, the Conference Organizing Committee also organized practical workshop sessions on the application of sutra translation, feng shui, chanting with Dharma instruments and tours of the achievements of Weixin Shengjiao in the world for the past 40 years.
It can be said that the 17th International Conference on Taoist Studies held in Taichung this time was an effective academic event, and in fact gave researchers the opportunity to meet and discuss different research topics that can be applied in life to bring peace and happiness like the spirit of Taoism.
