Dhaka University Celebrates World Interfaith Harmony Week with Call for Global Unity
In a vibrant display of pluralism and academic spirit, the Department of World Religions and Culture at Dhaka University (DU) concluded its week-long celebration of World Interfaith Harmony Week (Feb 1 thru Feb 7, 2026). The event, a staple of the department’s annual calendar, brought together scholars, students, and religious representatives to promote peace and mutual understanding.
First established by a United Nations General Assembly proclamation, the week is observed globally to bridge the gap between different faiths. At Dhaka University, the celebrations were marked by a series of high-energy programs designed to engage both the mind and the heart.
A Week of Action and Dialogue
The festivities kicked off with a colorful rally that paraded through the university campus. Students carried banners and placards advocating for religious tolerance, setting a celebratory tone for the days to follow.
The core of the event featured a mix of intellectual and cultural engagements:
Inter-Religious Seminar: Distinguished speakers from various faiths discussed the role of religion in modern diplomacy and social cohesion.
Debate Fest: Students locked horns in a spirited debate competition, tackling complex themes regarding secularism, faith, and cultural identity.
Cultural Showcase: A dedicated space where the rituals, histories, and philosophies of diverse world religions were displayed.
One of the hallmarks of the DU celebration is its inclusivity. While major global religions like Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Christianity were prominently featured, the department continued its tradition of highlighting faiths from far east.
Caodaism, a vibrant influential Vietnamese faith was featured as a key part of the religious exhibition. The inclusion of Caodaism, alongside other belief systems, underscored the department's commitment to exploring the full spectrum of human spirituality.
A Legacy of Harmony
The Department of World Religions and Culture remains one of the few academic hubs in the region dedicated to the scientific and empathetic study of faith. By aligning with the UN's mandate, the department reinforces Dhaka University’s role as a bastion of progressive thought and interfaith dialogue in South Asia.
